Been getting a few tests done at the doctors recently, and finally went to get the results, yesterday morning.I went in a reasonably fit 43 year old man and came out a fairly angry 43 year old man.
It turns out i have diabeties ( feck knows the spelling ) which i had a feeling about and its not too serious only type two. i can cope with that . while she was checking the rest of my results, i get told i have a high cholesterol level about 9.5 ( what ever that means) then i get an "ohhh i dont like that" apparently my liver is not doing too well, so then i get told i will have to stop the drinking, that is until i point out i have less than 4 units a week, so it seems the drink is not the problem, so now i have to wait three months and get more tests to see if its getting worse and by how much,
now this is all very well and i know its for the good, but both the blood tests involve me fasting for 12 hours, thats right 12 HOURS on two consecutive days, thats just not fair, youve all seen me im a fat b@stard, i like my food, but no, im going to have to starve for a whole day in total.
then theres the diabetes, mines can be controlled with diet, but before it will work i have to loose a stone to get me down to 12.5 stone. do doctors not realise the hard work that i put into getting a fat belly???
then theres the diet, a list of things that i can and cant eat. i can eat , wholemeal flour, wholemeal bread, crispbreads, brown rice, untoasted sugar free meusli, brown pasta and rice cakes (why would i want to) i cant eat sweet biscuits, cream filled biscuits, or any good biscuits basically.
i can eat vegetables, but nothing like chips (the best vegetable in the world). i only like two types of nut , coconut and cashew, can you guess which nuts i cant eat and the list goes on and on and on, basically everything good is barred and everything dull, drab and boring is allowed, aaarrrrggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

well thats that off my chest

p.s. this is not a sympathy gatherer, sympathy comes between sh1t and syphallis in the dictionary , this is just a common or garden rant

Gord, I was about your age when I became diabetic. That was about 15/16 years ago and I'm not dead yet. Unlike you though, I'm type 1 and on insulin, which in some ways makes it a little better in that if I want to occasionally indulge in something sweet I can compensate by taking extra insulin but the downside of balancing the insulin against my sugar levels is that I run a risk of hypoglycemia. If that became a regular occurrence I could lose my licence and that would be far far worse than being ill.
I'd be more concerned about my liver if I were you.
I hope you get sorted out soon.

Ask your doctor to refer you to a proper dietician. You don't have to live on cardbard biscuits and lettuce. :D

My mum's had type 2 for 30 years and she still munches Tunnocks Tea cakes.

Gordon, worry not chap, the world will not end at midnight, I'll confirm that at 00.01 right enough.

Being diabetic ain't the problem it used to be, modern medicines and an entire range of foods etc have all seen to that.

It could have been worse, being from Edinburgh you've managed to avoid AIDS for all those years, so luck must be on your side :D:D:D

Kind Regards

The deep fried mars bar will definitly not be on yer new diet sheet.
Better to come up to Dundee & share a "Dundee pa" with me & the Secret Millionaire.
Canny believe she was only 500mtrs from ma hoooose (cardboard box) & did not pop in for a Pa & a cupasoup.

In Dundee pie rhymes with peh.
Can you remember Wallace's Pie Shop in Castle Street? where you could hear gems like "geez twa plen bridies an an ingin een an ah"

Was in the Wallace Pie shop in Dura Street last time home.
Na peh's there now.
Its a locksmiths.

Us Aberdonians that live in the posh part of town cannot get our Dundee pronunciations accurate.
Living as I do by Baxter Park does not allow me to eat peh's.
I may stretch to a Flemings Steak & Gravy Peh though. As a treat.;););)

Did you see the secret millionare though? Think she was living off the hilltoon & had coffee outside the Albert Bar. Only 500 mtrs fa ma hoose.
Did'nt know I lived in squalor. It's amazing what T.V editing can do to alter an image of an area.

I'm 5 11 and around 12 and a half stone, got my HGV medical coming up soon when I'm 50. I know of a few guys who developed type 1 and lost their heavy goods licence. Hopefully I'll be fine.

Seriously though, cut back on some of the crap and take some exercise and it'll make a big difference. Good luck with it.

just catching up on this one Gord...

at least now you know what is causing (was causing) your problems and it can be fairly easily remedied if my dad is anything to go by! He weighs in fair bit more than you and still drinks when he wants to (frequently!!) eats a very normal diet and there is definitely no cardboard and raw veggies for him.... totally a very traditional "scottish" diet actually...but skipping the deep fried mars bars of course;)

Get some good nutritional advice as stated and get the cholesterol back down too then stop worrying about it and enjoy life again:)

Just remember that 7lbs weight loss equals 1bhp gain (roughly in physics terms).

So lose the factory issue can and have 16 pints of Murphys and a curry! But only once.

It's just "Big Fat B@stard" syndrome.

13 and a half stone my big fat ass. You're more like 17 and a quarter:lol2:

On a more serious note,Katie my 15 year old daughter has had Insulin dependant diabetes for 9 years and she eat's real well. It's not the end of the world Gord.

Don't eat to much crap, no full fat fizzy drinks, and lots of exercise and you'll be fine.
