I'm planning a route from Black Isle to Ullapool, looking at going A9, B9176, A836 to Tongue, west onto 838 then down 894, 837,Ledmore and onto A 835 to Ullapool. Does anyone know where we'll be able to get fuel on that route? I'm guessing we can make Tongue easily but don't know where the fuel stops are on the west coast bit.

You can tank at Skiac services (A9) or Tain, then there is a tanker at Lairg (A836) if you need, I would as it's a way to Tongue, there is a tanker there, then you should get back to Ullapool (A835 shell) from there (unless you ride a Baines Imola!!!;) )

Then again I could follow behind with the LandRover with it's twin jerry cans full of Super!!! ;)

...mind you, the road from here to Ullapool direct is amazing A835 - my own private racetrack!!!

thanks Ed, I know we can get to Tongue , its the bit down from there I'm worried about, its no problem for me or Linzi on the multi or F650 but those 2 KTM's might be pushing :)

I love the 835 from the junction from Garve to just before Ullapool, the bit up to the reservoir is amongst my favorite set of bends any where in the world.

Are your KTMs like Borderducs? if they are then they will do Paris - Dakar and back on half a tank (judging by the size of the bloody thing) ;)

I know what you mean about the 835; its fast, quiet and parts of it have a brand new road surface. The only bad bit are the old fashioned style catseyes they've used, they can be very upsetting to Imola front ends!!
In fact, its such a fantastic morning here this morning; I think I'm gonna give the Imola a shakedown up there before tomorrow's trackevening! :)

I discovered this last night and lets just say we had a very brief discussion about he offer!!

OK, tank range is apparently between 100 and 130 ut running in with luggage on we shouldn't realy plan for more than 100 miles

Tongue to Ullapool easily within their range then me thinks.

When carrying luggage on long rides like this (where fuel might be a problem) there is always room for a couple of Sigg bottles. These are high grade, spun aluminum drinks bottles, but are capable of holding fuel (under pressure even) for mountaineers stoves. Two of these stashed around your luggage, the 750ml ones, take up little room. If everybody in the group carries only one then you still have a viable resource to get one of you at least to the next stop, where something could be organised. Just a thought. Only buy the original branded ones though, cheaper imitations may not be good enough. Oh and a length of clear plastic hose for syphoning - you never know when a passing motorist may be friendly enough to help - three metres worth of 10mm bore, weighted at one end with a lump of lead, a couple of large machine nuts, etc.

There's a thread on www.ktmforums.co.uk (www.ktmforums.co.uk)regarding fuel range and as Lily has posted anywhere between 100-130 depending on how far you can twist your right wrist.

Got my SatNav with all the fuel stations listed so hopefully that will help also

Hi,
Your fuel stops from Black Isle North are
1 Skiach Services as you turn off the A9 up over the Struie.
2. Lairg.
3 Tongue
4. Durness
Not quite sure where you are going from there but I think you are going through Scourie and
5. ullapool
Depending on time of year and if you are travelling Sundays not all stations are open.
If you want exact times of opening etc let me know when you are doing this and no problem to give you the info.
We tend to work on place names here so road numbers confuse the locals!
Ed will be a local in another 30 years!!! :D :D :D
He is at least trying as a newcomer!!

... The Ceilidh Place in Ullapool do the best Peacan Blonde and Cappaccino in the Highlands. I can meet you there over the weekend, just need to know what time you will be there if you are leaving me in the morning.

Hey, I might not be local, but I have done a thorough recce of the thrashing roads around here (knowing what sort of track hooligans you are).

Gizmo,
There is fuel at Scourie and there might still be fuel at Kylesku. I reckon you could probably manage Durness to Ullapool anyway but Friday during the day will not be a problem.
Durness is not open Sunday and Tongue is only open for an hour on a Sunday.
If you go into the shop at Tongue (the pump is beside the shop but it is NOT on the main road!- it is 30 metres down a track to the shop!) you can go into the shop and buy your sticker which says " I love Tongue"!! Ideal present for the man who has every Ducati! Hope the weather holds for you! Might hear you as you pass. :D

I know both me and Linzi can do it, multi runs 160 plus the BM can do 220 miles between stops!! Its those crazy SM 950's chasing each other around that might not make it as its about 110 miles :) We'll probably fuel at Scourie as well then top up in Ullapool for the next day.

We'll check out the stickers and make lots of noise :)

it rained every day but was still enjoyable, that day around Gairloch it was a force 7/8 wind, multi in 4th gear on most hills struggling to pull. Got into Ft William frozen and wet but still smiling. Sun would be good but its about the roads, company, craic and food as well :)

Lily,
I know the tale is that it always rains in Scotland and when it's not raining it's snowing! Not true.
Black Isle rainfall is about the same as East Anglia. West coast gets rain due to mountains/Gulf Stream etc but it is usually mild. Are your waterproofs midgie proof though :(

If you bought your waterproofs at the same shop you made me buy them waterproof gloves then they definitely will not work. At one point on my recent trip abroad I realise I was wearing what amounted to 2 giant sponges on either hand. I dare not take my hands off the bars in case they plummeted groundwards such was the amount of water them gloves soaked up. :( They are still drying out now!

I remember getting stuck behind a coach for quite a long way, he just wouldn't pull over to let us past so after 5mins I started tooting the horn a bit, a mile or two down the road and passed lots of spots where he could have let us past so we both put our horns on (which were the air horns as it was a craze in the 80's) and just left them on until he pulled over. I think the passengers said something. Any way he got two fingers as we went passed him.
My Tongue sticker came this morning and it's for sticking on the inside of windows!

be rude not to Ed :D

What a trip, just under 1000 miles in 5 days doesn't sound like a lot really c.200 miles per day but when the average speed was below 50mph because of those damn twisties Scottish roads :D :D it was a bit of a long haul, not that I am complaining as it was stonking from start to finish.

I had two of the best days on a bike in years and in harsh contrast one of the wettest days on a bike also but you take that on the chin. Just wish I was going back again although if Gizmo had his way we'd be back in Ullapool at the weekend....

Have to say the KTM's performed flawlessly and were ran in over the course of the 5 days, fuel was never a problem as originally thought I dunno if because we were being a tad more gentle with the throttle because of running them in or they just return great mpg as they were using around 1 ltr to every 10 miles, and with a 17ltr tank we potentially could do 170 miles.

They were hustled around the highlands for 5 days and had beaming smiles from me and Lily, Ed had a quick spin on mine athough he didn't go too far he did seem to have a smile on his face when he came back... saying that he's always smiling, must mean I get a spin on the imola now then?

Great to meet/see various peeps again along our whistle stop tour, Pete and Abby for joining us for a day making the KTM contingent 3  Martin at Duc Glasgow for selling Claire something again! Ed for putting us up or was that putting up with us for a night and the great craic the following day watching the Cali hustle on the twisties, never knew you could do nack nack's on a Guzzi ;)

Stuart (or Stewart) 239Desmo and his stunning 750 and Scottch, Mejoulee, Tanya and Sam in Fort Bill.

Finally a big thanks to Michael and Linzi for inviting us along and Linzi's mum for making sure Elvis and Gizmo had somewhere to go whilst we were away playing.

That's very kind of you putting it down to the roads instead of my slow riding :o ;)

Hey, Jon,

you guys are welcome anytime to come up here. & sure you can have a go on the Imola - you didn't see much of it really while at mine!

Some great images and great memories me thinks! - never stood to attention on a Cali before!! :p

I'll hold you to that Ed ;)

Was laughing yesterday looking at the photo's I saw you stand up and salute from where I was but Gizmo's photo sums it up nicely. Pity you couldn't make the next day as it was much the same. although Lily and me did have a 30 mile thrash over the tops without using the brakes once, snotted the tyres up a tad :D

...the shame of it was that I could have made it on Saturday - and on the Imola - oh well, maybe next time.
What did you think of Wester Ross - as brilliant as Friday huh!!

The Cali is still pinging and dinging!!! :)

It was great meeting you guys - I enjoyed every minute of it, even the sitting round the table talking b*llocks - memories are made of this!!! :)

Almost exactly the same spot Ian , near the top of the Loch Carron road heading towards Kyle.

slight difference in the weather me thinks!!!

Jon, Claire - just fitted a new section to the Guzzi exhaust- taken off the colostomy bag under the engine and fitted a replacement 'H' section pipe. So you better be afraid the next time you come up here - you'll never be able to keep up with my 250kg (saved a kilo without the pipe!!;) ) beast now it's got even more stonk!! :D :D  ;)

I know I wasn't with you guys for the whole of your trip but the funniest thing I saw during my time with you was stopping in Tongue and seeing Claire pulling out a nail file and doing her nails (one always has to look one's best in Scotland) :)
