You know what really confused me? You have the scenes with Jack (with beard) about to kill himself etc and drinking heavily and taking pills etc etc. You go along thinking that this happened before ending up on the island etc etc. Its only in the last scene (with Kate) that it becomes apparent that these scenes are after he returns from the island. However in these (bearded Jack) scenes he refers a number of times to his father in the present tense? His father died before the plane crash? Someone explain that to me please.

Jack identified his body and made the preparations to take it back to Los Angeles. His body may or may not have been on Flight 815 as Jack was repeatedly told that he had not made the proper arrangements for its transport. ("White Rabbit"). However, his coffin was on the flight. Later, the coffin was found to be empty.

Jack says of him, "My father--he didn't want to take responsibility for his actions, so he blamed it on fate." This is in reference to one of Christian's favorite quotes, "That's why the Red Sox are never gonna win the Series." He also tells Sawyer, "it's fate. Some people are just meant to suffer." ("Outlaws")

In the flash forward in "Through the Looking Glass" Jack references him twice as if he was still alive. First, Jack tells Dr. Hamill to get his father "down here" and see if his father is drunker than he is. Secondly, he presents a pharmacist with a prescription Jack says was written by Christian Shephard (although possibly Jack could have had some of his father's prescription tablets and written the prescription himself).

Jack's Dad did die - it's why he went to Australia after all.

Jack thinks / believes his father is still alive because he appeared in visions to him on the island?
