Nice one Ian, stick at it.
What, if anything, are you using for photo editing?
Adobe photoshop/cs3 seems to get good reviews, but I believe Adobe lightroom (or is it darkroom?) is getting good feedback too. Anyone use it?

I have not installed the Canon software as yet as when I hooked it up to the Mac, i-photo fired up and I dropped them in there - I have Photoshop although I have not edited anything from this camera yet !
One thing though and its just a wondering thing, if I don't have the Canon software installed will I be missing software updates for the camera ?

Hi Ian,
I'd say yes if the camera needs s/w (software) updates, but you can use the 'file types' in 'tools', then folder options of an 'explorer' screen to maintain which s/w you wish to use to display photo's as a default.. The canon s/w can be installed and held in the background for updates only. If your not sure I'll ring and talk you through what I mean.

The Canon software doesn't do update searches (at least not the 350d set up) although it is an absolute doddle to use.
As soon s you connect your camera you'll get the splash that allows you to either download all of your phtos or make a selection
When you download you can preset (as I have) the folder option so that all photos are downloaded to date named folders, i.e. mine are all yyyy_mm_dd. That way you have a sorted list no probs.
Once downloaded the photos are then brought up in zoom browser which is straight forward enough and plenty good for browse and culling of your pics.
With the lakeland slate, try getting the shot end on so it's not so obvious what the material is.
Good sources for photo ideas abound on the net but one I've used is:
http://www.dcmag.co.uk/ where you can set up your own portfolio easy peasey.

Don't bother installing the Canon software, keep an eye on the Canon site for firmware updates.
lightroom is more of a workflow tool, it allows bulk conversion of RAW files, you can set white balances, work with curves, colour correcy, alter exposure and run it on a batch of files. personally i prefer Capture 1 Pro and iview for cataloguing.
Photoshop CS3 is an image manipulation program, you've got tools to manipulate the image, add effects, filters and more, for the average user its way too powerful and you'll end up using effects to fix things into a worse state than you started :)
Photoshop elements is a good place to start for image editing, its got a simple set of controls and you get the basic features of photoshop, once you can use elements and need more thats the time to spend the money on photoshop. its also quite reasonably priced for an Adobe app.
I use elements linked to iphoto, I don't use the adobe bridge browser, I've added a couple of plug ins to iphoto, keyword manager to catalogue images, google earth, flickr export. For work i tend to use iview media pro because of its ability to produce web galleries easily and i can catalogue the studio shoots with comments and organised sets then send it all to our graphic designer who does the RAW conversions etc.

For reading your exif meta data I believe Microsoft do a free exif reader called something like exifer.exe?

...without belittling Ian's intelligence and ability to learn, maybe all this is alot to take in on his first outing with DG SLR photography!!! then again maybe not, what do I know???
Ian, take the thing off Auto never use it again !!!! :)
A good habit to get into however is to 'park' the camera on 'P' which allows to grab the camera if you need to take a quick snap, but it alows you to take multiple shots aswell as single & timer shots. (Well it does on the 20D and is useful for those action sports shots) Fully auto won't allow you to do this. :)
