The Urbis will be hosting an exhibition of Hacienda posters, material and more over the coming months. I'm a big fan of Factory and Peter Saville so me and Linzi will be making our way down for a day. Had anyone else planned on going?

Hi All
I might pop down if you let me no what time your gonna be there, It was a great to go (yes it was my era too) and sad to see its demise as a club. Its strange some friends and I were reminising about the happy nights we had in the Hacienda last weekend. So it would be good to bump into a few DUN faces....
Agree with all the sentiments expressed above though I never made it down to Manchester. Some time ago I read a comment made in the context of an article about something else, and it was to the effect that the Hacienda had to close bcause of the street gangs? What happened?

Basically, and this is probably a gross simplification, the security on the door was corrupt & let in drug dealers galore, and were probably dealing themselves. All this then degenerated into a turf war between the rival groups of dealers.
I think the first death due to ecstacy in the UK happened there, and of course there was the legendary inability of Factory Records to make any money from its ventures, no matter how much of a cash cow it could have been (biggest selling 12" single in the world, ever: Blue Monday by New Order lost money on every copy sold!). The Hac closed in 1997 with massive debts.
Thats why Anthony Wilson has to have his cancer medication bought by all the people he helped up over the years, he can't afford the £3500 per month they cost.
All that said, I had some great times there through the Mid-Late eighties.

yup, what Rob said :) the 24 Hour Party People movie sort of covers it, well worth a watch if you are interested in the history of factory. Don't know if anyone watches the Manchester programmes on Channel M ( i think thas what its called) but you get the occasional one on the current music/arts scene.
Control is due for release in September, I'm looking forward to that.

The Hacienda was great in the good times, I used to go every couple of months even saw some really great bands play there :D
Back then I also had the pleasure (if you can call it that) of working for a small IT company who did all of the support for Factory records and every now and again had to go to the offices which were less than a mile away from the Hacienda, was good sitting there chatting to Tony and having a nice tour of the archives down in the basement

Still got my original membership card, used to go a lot in the early days, even managed to play there with my band, truly a misguided but magical place, the exhibition brought it all back,my daughter has been twice this weekend, trying to work out what dad's on about:cool:
Though i used to live just down the road in Old Trafford i never went to the Hacienda once, always went out to Jillys/Rock World every weekend (so i could let my hair down!:D ) then sometimes onto a very dodgy late night drinking hole in Hulme, full of some interesting characters that one of the lads knew.

Don’t know if any of you caught last weeks EM, if not it’s well worth downloading. Tong (runs through the best of the Factory Records label) and Mike Pickering celebrating the life of the late great Tony Wilson. Great stuff
