My first time shooting cyclists, a friend of mine was a race marshall so I went along for the ride and really enjoyed it, light was doing weird things, amazing sun to dark rain cloud - really getting into this photography lark ;) any critique is most welcome !

Did you try any panning shots? These riders would have been any easier subject to try out on for next time you are at the track!

Oh! You needed a slower shutterspeed then to blur the background:)

the camera will be on auto, probably sports mode, if so shutter speed will be really high, probably 1/1000th. I'm now shooting on the Tv mode fixing shutter speed and am getting better results. manual focus as well unless you take a burst of shots, the auto focus hasn't usually caught up on my 350 until the 2nd or 3rd shot.

pop up Ian and I'll show you what I've altered.

Correct Mikey - it was on Auto in Sports mode, I will bob up at some point don't know when it will be though - what times is Wheelie School next weekend as I have a new toy to play with, talk about running before walking !

Ah got ya Steve, still a steep learning curve, not really ventured to far from Auto yet but I am gaining confidence everytime I take it out of the bag !

If that is the case presumably your depth of field is going to be seriously compromised meaning your focus becomes even more of a problem. Switch the auto off and go manual!;) :)

I remind me of a song - 'All the gear and no idea' !

I am struggling big time with my new digital and keep trying to think what all the functions do or don't do in relation to my "old" 35mm SLR! It's like learning another language.
I have a "pop up" flash that seems to have a mind of its own and every so often a pencil torch beam emits from the camera like something out of Star Trek! I have worked out it is possibly the auto focus not having enough light.

Once I have figured out how to control the shutter speed and the aperture priority function I will leave it on that or full manual.

The auto focus function has so many variations as to what it is focusing on that by the time I set the camera to whatever I need the subject matter will have died of old age!

Try a lower viewpoint to eliminate the distracting background. Or just move somewhere else? The best pics are in your eye before you press the shutter release.
