Spent the last two days at the Lowther Horse Trails, I was mesmorised by the Gundogs, what amazing character and intelligence - really good fun and great for the crowds to watch and of course for me to photgraph !
I spent most of the time down by the river where they were doing the retrieval tests.

I like gundogs, but couldn't manage a full one:D
Chance of a springer 4 month pup on friday but too late - working dog, full papers et cetera. At least with a dog if it ain't wagging it's tail then you know somethings wrong.
Brother had a Schutzhound Rottweiller and spent many a time tracking with him.
All in all, gundogs are amazing but what you are seeing is the best of the best. If any dog has the slightest flaw then it's not going to make it to the top.
Nice piccies Ian.

It really was an education in how a dog can really behave if trained correctly, although I did see one stop for a dump, it was doing really well at the time aswell, a dogs gotta do, what a dogs gotta do I guess !

My Grandfather was a Gamekeeper,so grew up with Gun Dogs love to see them working and dont they enjoy it?. Well bred Dogs are fantastic totrain so much is just natural to them.I had a marvellous Springer who was just stunning to work with,His ability to search was incredible. However bit like me old age got the better of him, two years ago he died whilst out doing a retrieve swear he went with a smile on his face.Superb photos by the way.
I do miss my black Lab....

Sorry to hear, if he went while working then I bet he was happy ! I was just mesmorised by these dogs, so well trained, yet they were not working, in the dogs eyes it is one big game, it was so good to see, you know I don't think I heard one dog bark down at the Gundog display, just nuzzle the owners and lay in the sun until 'playtime' came round again.
They knew everytime the gun went off, even though they were sleeping / resting / chilling, they knew it wasn't their turn, yet looked at the handlers with a 'Oh go on, let me have another go' look in their eyes !

There fantastic,I was told by the vet that my old springer had a dodgy heart, but I couldnt go out without him, tried once and he just pined and all day so thought what the hell let him go doing what he loved, like I said sure he was smiling when he went,I think you may have found your next hobby!!:)

He is class just amasing how they just do so much by instinct.I had a collie Lab cross crazy dog didnt know whether to round up or pick up,but what a character, fishermen had right of way at my old place to go down the drive way then down to the river, what fun he had hiding in the trees before running out like a mad thing then trotting off once they had scattered !!:)

You may be right with the next hobby bit, just been offered / asked to do a shoot with a Malamute off the back of the Gundogs pics - best read the manual again

Here's my 'gun-dogs' - ok neither of them are working dogs, but they are trained to that extent and are brilliant retrievers (well Monty was when he was young - now 12 and sleeps most of the time!)...

Great photos, lovely dogs and what a setting, they dont need to be working dogs to enjoy doing what comes natural to them, its so rewarding to watch them in action, and how much they enjoy it:)
