I have been asked / challenged by someone to photograph Salmon jumping a weir, it could be worth a bit of cash so I don't mind spending time on the project - I have 2 sites in mind for this and I know they have already started jumping at both locations.
What I cannot seem to find though is what time of day they are most active, I have found out that they prefer to jump after heavy rain so no problems there as the rivers are quite full at the moment.
I remember watching them as kid and it is awesome to see, gonna be one hell of a challenge to get some good piccies though !
If anyone can help it would be great !

Ian,
...always the usual suspects just waiting to come up with something scarcastic or stupit (but funny!!) :p
You should get up here and sit on the river bank of any river, they are in abundance!
If the weather is bright - fast shutter speeds (1000+) coupled with relatively high ASA/ISO settings (400+) depth of fields deep enough to capture both nearest and furthest areas of your frame. - a great recipy for capturing amazing action frozen in time!
good luck and let us see the results...
....so that Davie can sell them down his road as his own work!!!! ;)

What about the focus or does that not really matter in your world? :D
Oh....and its "recipe" .....I thought you were well educated after finishing at Eton?

Could I suggest that you keep the Multi and when it comes to the photography just stand a bit closer to your subject and achieve the same result? :)

Lots of rain last night then bright and sunny today so went out with the camera - I have about 250 pictures of raging torrents, I did get quite a few fish jumping, just that none of them resemble fish, more like logs trying to go UP the river, this is the best of the bunch and shows, that with more patience than I had today it will be possible to get a great shot, they are just so damned unpredictable.
After a while if you saw one try and fail it would return to the same place to try again, forget the Salmon ladder, most were trying for the highest point of the weir where the flow was strongest - Salmon are as dumb as Pheasants it seems !

As for the deer, they were much more well behaved !
