View Full Version : 1999, 996 headlight needed

After Easter Monday's merry romp I find myself in need of forward facing illumination. Those of you who were there will have seen the damage. Firstly does anyone know ( I have not yet had chance to look) if the glass lenses are separate to the reflector? And/or if the headlights are available as left and right side, or are they a pair as one unit?
Does anyone have anything they want to sell, or point me in the direction of someone who does?
Thanks for your help.
And by the way I will have some headlight protectors if any of those are kicking around. I will pay, naturally, this is not a request for charity.

Its all one unit, and if I recall about £250 for a new one. I do have one with one broken lens in my garage somewhere though, someone will know if its possible to break the bond and change the glass on one side only? Problem is a friend of mine phoned me Monday morning with the same problem so he has first refusal of my unit. I will dig it out as I'm not sure which side is ok.

Just dug it out Pete, the side you need is ok and looking at it I think a bit of patience with a dremel or similar could get the glass out in one piece. I will have to text my mate though and see what side he has broken as he has first chance if its the same nearside as yours. Will let you know asap.

Thanks Martin, that could be just the ticket. I'll have a look on ebay too, and Overripe sent me a list of contact numbers, breakers etc so will get on to that soon. Suppose I could always get a daylight MOT like Lily!

Make sure the fleabay ones are UK lights, most I've seen are Euro lights so the reflector points the wrong way, I think this is an easy fix, but as Martin has said it is possible to dremel the glass off and rebond I believe

i couldnt swear to this but i think theyre bonded on with a silicon sealant which should be easy enough to buy at most diy stores

Bad news Pete, matey who I give first shout to needs it (geofftwinpower) He has broken the same side as you. The headlamp has been lying around here for about 5 years then 2 people need one the same day! I have heard of people managing to extract the glass ok and refit it. I think there is some kind of 2 pack windscreen bonding stuff that sets very quick. I have told him if hes not going to use it to let me have it back so I can forward it to you.

Typical isn't it just... Martin. Let me know anyway. Thanks everybody, I have contacted the two ebay sellers, see what they will do. I think I can see now, or work out, how to debond and rebond so if necessary I will do it. Lily, tape is on already, thanks, how are you feeling today? I do have some clear, thin perspex which I could form to shape and make a presentable repair too - MOT not till Aug anyway. Thanks everybody - BERTO, that sounds good, is it UK spec dipping correctly? Will keep you all informed.
Thanks again all.

I found the squashed body inside the light this morning, conducted a CSI examination, analysed all the data - DNA, body imprint, blood spatter, GSR, glass fragment impaction and decided it was actually an example of the Guatamalan Green Necked Blood Sucking Fruit Fly - flyominimus verdigreenidus slurpus. Very rare, hardly known in the Northern regions of England, has a life cycle of four days only - this particular fecker was a junior - 33 hours old, approx weight 0.009 grammes (calculated from bodily remains, fluid distribution etc).
Conclusion - body mass insufficient in itself to cause such catastrophic and terminal damage to the glass lens. All injuries and breakages could only result from excess speed at time of impact.
As the fruit fly can only achieve about 0.5 mph in free forward flight, the calculated combined speed, on impact, of over 300mph, is mostly attributable to the good old 996 itself. Ride Ducati - you know it makes sense........Loris, Loris, where are you? See what happened.....
one thing pete,it couldn't have been a pebble kicked up from my back wheel,i hardly saw which way you went!!!! ;)

DK in Newcastle Staffs had new ones for £200 + vat. I got one a couple of months ago. They are UK spec and geniune Ducati items.

Yes, I can also get them from Ducati Leeds no problem, same price but there are doubtless better ways to spend £240.........that's a lot of gas...... Would sooner do the miles than have it looking pretty. S/H will do nicely, just have to be patient methinks.

Just to update the story. I finally received one from a guy in France. A Brit he had migrated there to work and had to change his lights to right hand dip - so he bought new ones. He charged me £105 (incl carriage and insurance) for the almost brand new unit he had removed. Only needs fitting now. I have also got some nice clear plastic lens protectors from a company in the States - £39.95 incl carriage which look very good - from an aircraft company so they may be a little better quality material than just perspex - but maybe not. However the price was right so I am happy enough. Need fitting also. Thanks to all.

don't really know and don't really care, the quality is excellent anyway and the delivery was good. A need satisfied.
