    Default Newbie and rebuild

    Hi all,

I'm a Brit living over the pond in New Hampshire.

Had this 900GTS (79) for a few years and it eventually let go. I am in the process of getting her rebuilt and have been reading other threads here for information and inspiration.

As you can see from the attached picture she is not quite standard, but I do like the basic, old style look.

She is/was a blast to ride but this year will be on the '78 Z1000 during the rebuild.

Will try and give updates for those interested.

    Cool!

Good luck with the rebuild, what "let go"? Love the cafe racer look but gotta ask, where's the battery?

The battery will be under the seat hump.

    So,
Here's a little history and some answers to the questions and comments. The bike was on Ebay a few years back and I bought it from someone fairly local.
It came stripped down with no lights of any kind which lead me to believe it may have seen a little club racing. The owner had ditched the fuel tank and seat and bought some fiberglass parts from Syds Cycles in Florida. The tank is from a early 70's 750.
At some time someone had also chopped the rear seat frame and ground off most of the tabs on the frame that would be useful for mounting side panels.!!
I ran the bike for a couple of years and threw some money at it for new front calipers, carb rebuild kit, new Dyna coils and had the Bosch pickups redone by Mdina. Also purchased a rather expensive new kickstart lever since the old one looked like a P.O.S. and the bike had been converted from electric start.
The very small battery is mounted on a bracket between the down tubes, ( almost )seen in the picture below the rear carb. The rearsets were a combination of purchased parts and the help of a friend with a CNC shop.

The bike ran great, sometimes a little fussy to start and suffered from a host of small issues that come from and old machine. The rebuild was prompted by an event one Saturday morning which started with a high speed run down an empty dual carriageway and finished in a cloud of smoke and no compression.

Skipping a few months due to lack of funds, I pulled the motor apart to take a look at what the problem may be. I did contemplate sending the motor out to someone to have it rebuilt professionally but the price involved was huge. (about $9k)....as it is, it will probably cost me close to that in the long run anyway. The only obvious problem was light scoring on the horizontal cylinder wall and on further strip down, some play in the big ends.

So what I am looking at right now is to have the crank rebuilt with new rods and bearings, the cylinders rebored for new 86mm pistons and a goal to replace all the bearings and any worn parts as found.

My first major purchase was the crank kit which includes new Arrow rods, custom bearings, shims, sludge trap setscrews and a new crank pin. Yours for the modest sum of $2200 !! Add to that a new high volume oil pump. I have seen the thread on here with regard to the oiling system and I think I will take that path too.!!

I guess I should actually start a new thread somewhere and post some pics.

Watch this space... or another one
