Default starting issues after a run

I've just re-built my 2004 St4s after getting another petrol tank (old one was rusted through) & having the bike re-sprayed. It starts 1st time and runs fine but when I stop & switch the engine off the bike won't restart and needs to sit for 20-30 mins & then it starts no problem. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Does this happen after any run then stopping or does the engine have to run long enough to get warm first? If it is happening with a warm engine then my first thought would be the crank sensor. It is the same as for a Fiat 1.2 Punto

I haven't been on a long run with it yet. I drove it to the garage to get it mot'd (Friday) about 5 miles and after the mot it wouldn't start. I left it there over night and it started no problem, drove home and got my garage keys out the house & it wouldn't start. I left it for about 30 mins and it started. I want to take it on a long run but don't want to get stuck. PS it lay in my garage unused for about 10 months (a long story).

5 miles is enough to get the engine reasonably warm. I'd still consider the crank sensor at fault. If it is the revcounter won't work, so you won't see the needle flicker when it is cranking.

Thanks guys, I think I'll take the bike on a long run this weekend & see what happens, I can always just wait for 30 mins if it doesn't start when required.

The relay is always worth changing but ScoTT's symptoms don't sound like a relay problem. If the relay fails the pump doesn't run at switch on and there will be no sparks nor injection. A quick check is to swap round the 2 relays under the seat. The other one is for the fan.

I'm only 'down the road' at Hartlepool, Scott - never realised I was so near, sorry!

Do you have any more symptoms or tests you have tried?

NB - Derek, is this possibly something a DIY (ducati) Diag kit could help with?
Could be just the excuse I need to try one.
