    Default starting problem

My 916 is having difficulty starting. Once you press the starter there is a slight delay before the engine turns over, usually it fires but it seems there is some resistance possibly a corroded connector.
Does anyone have any likely starting points (no pun intended) for diagnosis.
The battery is pretty new and is at 12.6v even after a couple of starting attempts.
    Cheers.

I had similar problems with my 907. A delay before the starter turned and not as quickly as I thought it should.
Initially I fitted new starter brushes - no difference. Then I replaced the solenoid - no difference. Then the starter brushes stuck. I took it to bits and freed them off - still no difference. Then they stuck again
I was fed up taking it to bits so bought a new starter from Electrex. Wow! What a difference. It has never turned over so quickly.
I couldn't find anything wrong with the old starter but for some reason it must have been drawing too much current which I think is why the brushes stuck, the earth one was more or less welded to the brush holder.
It is worth checking the solenoid first though.

Been there, done that, still doing it! 916 Monster, similar issues, starter felt a bit lazy.

Along similar lines to Derek, so far in the last few weeks I've........

    1. New Battery Fitted
    2. New Solenoid fitted(£35.00 new from protwins)
    3. New Starter motor (also electrex) fitted (£99.00 delivered). Pig of a job as the side case needs to be split.
    4. New cables fitted between solenoid and starter

And still the B*****d bike won't turn over. I get a click from the (new) solenoid but the starter doesn't turn. Voltage between the solenoid bolts is 12v + so power getting to it. When I check the power at the starter motor end it's only getting around 4v Other strange thing is that with the ignition off I still get a 12v reading across the solenoid, again is this normal??

Anyway, my 34 year old gpz750 is being dusted down for summer use......starts 1st time every time!!!!!

Check the battery earth cable to the engine. It bolts to the crankcase at the rear of the clutch.
The solenoid connects straight to the battery so will have 12V on that side. The other solenoid cable connects to the starter and should show 12V when the solenoid is engaged. If it only shows 4V then there is high resistance somewhere, if not the solenoid then the battery connections or ground to the engine.

Had a similiar problem on a 996. When replacing the starter cables , (including a meatier earth cable) the original starter cable connector literally crumbled - amazing it started at all. After replacing cables the bike always started immediately but it'll never spin over like a 4 cylinder.
